# Exit & Emergency Lighting Monthly Self-Check

**Frequency:** Monthly

NFPA 101 calls for a monthly functional check of every exit sign and emergency light -- most units have a push-to-test button that makes this quick.

## Checklist

- [ ] Exit sign is illuminated and clearly legible
- [ ] Pressing the test button causes emergency lights to activate
- [ ] Light heads actually illuminate the egress path, not just each other
- [ ] Egress path below each unit is unobstructed
- [ ] Housing and lenses are undamaged, with no cracks or missing covers

Note the location of any unit that didn't activate or looked damaged:
